How to fix a leaking shower base

Published : 07/01/2013

If your shower base is leaking, there’s no time to waste. Repairs need to be done as soon as possible so that the substrate and surrounding framework of your home do not become water damaged. Here are a few tips to think about when repairing leaks to your shower base.

One of the most common reasons for shower bases to start leaking is cracked tile grout and compromised sealants. Houses naturally expand and contract as the seasons bring heat and cold, and over time, the grout between your tiles will begin to suffer. In other cases, cheaper sealants such as silicon will begin to peel, allowing water to seep underneath.

To fix these problems, you don’t necessarily need to replace all of the tile work, but you will need to remove the old grout and sealants. One of the most important tools for this job is a grout saw. These start from just a few dollars for micro saws or for a little less elbow grease, you can move right up to an oscillating tool.

Once all of the old grout is removed, you will need to allow the area to dry fully before applying new grout. Grouts today come in many colours, and some are also flexible, so that there is less chance of the grout cracking. Also, choose a grout that has a low absorbency rate. For example, Megagrout MG11 has an absorption rate of 0.0001%, which makes it more waterproof than ceramic or vitrified tiles.

Once you have regrouted your tiles, you will need to allow them to dry fully before applying a sealer to the entire shower unit. This will help to reduce any further leaking and guard against water seeping through any tiny areas you might have missed.

If you don’t feel confident to complete your shower repairs yourself, then by all means, go with a trained professional. The most important benefit of hiring a professional is that they can detect if further damage has occurred to your home and ensure the sealing is done properly. A good professional can be in and out within a day or two, and upon completion of work, your shower should be ready to use again the next day.
